Fic for this fandom multiplies so much faster than I can keep up, but I keep trying to read it all! So much good fic! (So much good gen and angst and family fic! Whoo!)

Oh, and this is all from the kinkmeme so far.

EDIT: Okay, I finally read through the dozen new fics since my last sweep and had to add another one. I'll probably also be collecting stuff from ff.net to rec at http://ffnet-goodfic.livejournal.com/ (and I still need to post fic of my own at some point this week. Busy, busy)

Fic of many flavors! )
stariceling: (lurk)
Something I keep meaning to mention here: Your Fanfiction, where I just finished transferring all of my fic a few months ago, seems to have died. I can't find it. I can't even find anything indicating what has happened. It's been this way for a while at this point and it seems pretty certain it's not coming back.

At this point I think my main option is just putting all the old stuff in matching entries here and on Dreamwidth (http://stariceling.dreamwidth.org/). At least then I can back-date all the stuff to where it goes, and hope that only one set will be lost at a time. (On the off chance someone is looking for a fic that is unavailable, just mention here and I'll put that up first. Even if it's something like "wasn't there that one Jojo fic with the thing?" because I'll just post the lot.)

There's also a certain temptation to just go and post great swaths of it on ff.net, since that seems to be the one place people actually find it. (I can only think of a couple porny fics I still like anyway.)

Also, I am having one of those days when reading fic just gets me into trouble. The worse kind of trouble,* when you find something that makes the fic you're working on suddenly worthless. And I don't just mean someone had a similar idea. I'm betting the fandom's ff.net section will hit 2000 fics before Christmas and it is a very simple idea. What's getting to me is this other person took a completely different tack and made it work so brilliantly that now I just feel stupid. And to add insult to injury they did it in about 1/3rd of the words I've wasted on this thing so far.

I'll probably write it anyway. For the bit with the glaciers if nothing else. But right now I'm going to be over here banging my head on the keys and feeling like a hack.

*The better kind of trouble being when you find that no one has written what you want to read and the next thing you know you have over 10K of Rune Factory Frontier fic and growing because fandom needs moar Kross, dammit! Probably won't be posting any of it until I actually finish the game, though.

I swear, one of these years I will manage to pace myself and not have to break into an all-out NaNo sprint in the last week-or-less.

On the other hand: Yaaaaay! I wins! With like an hour to go and everything!

Oh, yeah, I also broke my most words churned out in a day record. Formerly in the neighborhood of 10K, matched a handful of times but never surpassed. Today I managed over 14K.

I think most of them are still the usable kind of words, even. Though at this point I am exhausted and actually feel rather sick and still need to pack for a trip and blargity...

I still have an hour left and everything!

... someone please tell me to go pack and not try to one-up myself by trying to round that daily wordcount up to 15K.

(Oh, funny note: The program I like to write in counts hyphenated words all as one word. Nano software separates them out. This doesn't make that big a difference in the long run, but it's really nice to switch to your Nano wordcount file, find it saying you have exactly 50,000 words even, and know you can safely toss that into the Nano validation script thing because the number will go up, not down. I gained about 200 words. And then finished the scene and plugged it in again, because while 50K on the nose is shiny, getting the scene done is infinitely better.)

EDIT: Aaand I just made it to the 15K in a day mark. Because apparently I have no self control whatsoever, but at least I can sometimes make even my failures great.

Now I have proved what I can do, please excuse me so I can go keel over and never do it again. It might end me if I tried.

Well, this is a bit frustrating.

After rereading Ursula Vernon's unfinished work "Elf vs. Orc," and then reading some of Nanashi's fic in quick succession, I got bitten by the urge to write more of The Longest Night. It came out in a rather different style than what I have been trying to do for this fic.

I really wanted to try at writing something like a fairy tale. Not a happy chirpy Disney-type fairy tale (Past the Edge of the World has that covered), but one that expresses the feeling that the world is vast and unknown and dangerous beyond whatever little circle of civilization you may inhabit. Where magic is arbitrary. Where characters don't know all the rules, and the ones they don't know can and will end in death and further unpleasantness.

I love those sorts of stories. I want desperately to write one. Or several.

Instead I have something which has become far more matter-of-fact than the previous chapters. My brain is trying to ape Ursula Vernon's writing style and it needs to stop that Right Now because I am terrible at it. I would love to do dry humor, but I can't manage it consistently enough to carry a story, and more importantly it blends into this particular story about as subtly as a red baboon butt.

I'll poke at it for a few days. Maybe I'll try to rewrite it in something closer to the style I was going for. This is a very frustrating project all around. Every time I touch it I seem to come out writing it in a different style!

I have been getting a lot of random Y!M messages from people I don't know. Most are obviously spam and the rest are too vague for me to have any idea who they would be from if they weren't. And one I think was a case of mistaken identity or something.

So if you're reading this and I blocked or ignored you, I'm sorry but I didn't recognize your username.

Right now I'm blocking everyone not already on my contacts list, so if you're not a spambot and want to talk to me, please send me a PM or something.

Cut beacuse I have made my decision for now )

Here's a better reason for this post to exist. Here are the new fic offerings from YFF:

Homeward?
Series: Beyblade
Summary: At the very end of season one. Max has a difficult decission to make, and turns to perhaps the most unexpected person for help. (Kai+Max friendshippy ficlet)

And I also posted a series of Tantei Gakuen Q fics centered around Hongou, Kinta and Nanami, one of which I don't think I posted here before:

Old Lessons, New Plans
Series: Tantei Gakuen Q
Summary: Hongou-sensei slowly settles in at DDS, trying to prod Kinta to excel and dealing with his own past relationship with Nanami. (3 fics, currently)

EDIT: Changed the links to AO3 uploads.

I have been thinking about this for a while, but with ff.net currently engaging in a massive fit of... WUT it seems like a good time to get recommendations.

I want a place where I can just put up all of my fic in one central location. I have pretty much failed at getting my own site up and properly updated. Yet I am horribly, horribly picky and can't seem to find a place I am happy with. Options so far:

comparing notes on different archives I have looked at )

But here's the thing: If I'm going to be posting all my old stuff, I want to be able to indicate that it is old stuff. Some of it I cannot even stand to look at anymore. I don't want it mixing with my current stuff.

Lunaescence and Your Fanfiction look like my best options so far. The ability to set some sort of original publication date is pretty much the only thing lacking from either. Luna I have been with longer and am dearly fond of and already know it works, but YFF it would be easier to post all my back-fic now while the archive is very young and just add giant "originally published XX 2004" or whatever warnings in the notes and summary and have it quickly be buried (I hope).

Here is where I could go with LJ or DW because I can set the dates, but this becomes annoying when chapters are involved. On the other hand, this would be easier since a lot of my stuff is already on here anyway. I would only have to add about 4 years worth of fic, instead of 12.

Is there some perfect archive out there I'm missing? Traits I apparently want: Wide range of categories/characters and easy to add new ones, allows adult fics, allows fic series, needs to have the whole warnings/tags/genres/ratings/whatever system NOT be a mess, allows manually set original publication date, easy to navigate, easy to upload fics. (Traffic, size, or likelihood of getting reviews aren't a concern, BTW.)

And if anyone has a spare pony lying around, I'd like one of those too. :P
Not really. I have nowhere to put a pony. I'll settle for just the archive recs, really

That is about what I have been surviving on lately. I can't remember the last time I was this sick for this long. And in between trying to get shit done I have kind of been watching all of the (Adventures of) Tintin.

I have somehow managed to memorize the stories well enough that I can watch the cartoon in French and follow it (Tintin's French VA is adorable and I regret nothing). I did finally get to see the new movie, which is brilliant. I have no idea how virtually every still image of CGI Tintin manages to look so... off, when his constantly-moving screen self looks so perfect.

Sideways priorities aside, I am trying very hard to contain myself and not to devolve into fangirling. There will probably be fic eventually, because there's always fic, isn't there?

On that subject, I'm afraid to look at the last two things I posted in case they are incoherent head-cold dithering. ugh... Haven't even posted the Toriko one to ff.net yet.

Throat has opened back up to where I can breathe again. Sleep now.
stariceling: (dead)
Ugh. So my new computer may finally be giving up the ghost and dying on me, and after what it took just to keep it going for six months I am loath to sink any more money into the thing.

grumbling about computers now... )

My writing is backed up, of course. I have priorities! My dad loaned me his external hard drive so most of my important stuff is actually backed up now. I can write on my old computer, but the old computer no longer does internet so posting is a bit of a problem. I think I'll have to write on the one computer then switch to the other to go online in 1- or 2-hour chunks. At least the writing is safe. (note to Tsuki-kun: you fic beta is saved in my writing folder, so that is safe as well. I will get that beta to you on time, and damn the computer problems!)

EDIT: After a little research, I am now making eyes at the Panasonic toughbooks. They are adorable and made to be dropped 6 feet! But they're $2,000-4,000. Yikes.

But in spite of everything, you still get fic! I'll probably separate this into two posts later. Oh, and this weekend I hope to start posting the first round of the prompt fics.

Title: Heat of a Frozen Infatuation 9/? (Read previous parts here)
Pairing: Max+Kai
Warnings: Romance and some violence
Words: 7975
Teaser: While Max tries to sort out his own feelings, Kai's stress reaches a breaking point that makes things even more complicated.

Read fic... )

*plots her Nanowrimo novel short story idea(s)*

*excitedly writes the prologue*

*remembers that she is 10 days early*

Um... oops. *headkeys*

I am considering this year just adding up all the fiction words I write and nevermind what project it's on (er... maybe I won't count fanfiction words? :P *hides*). But I want to focus on one thing at a time and maybe get something done for once. But maybe I'm just letting myself cheat because I've never won an odd year yet.

In any case... pre-Nano wordcount: 644.

Maybe I'll go after the story for a week or so and call it a warm-up exercise? In any case, I can't seem to write or sleep right now with the... WTF, is that an electronic version of the Flintstones theme or what? Whatever-it-is next door. I'm going to get some hot chocolate and curl up with a mystery or something.

(Oh hey, Tsuki-kun? Guess what I'm writing! It's the short story I originally thought up when you asked if I could write anything for you to make a manga out of! Even though I know you have two original manga projects and don't need it now. I'm still not sure how to write something to be manga-adapted, so I'm just writing it. I hope that's okay...)

EDIT: *immediately goes and writes ~300 words on a completely unrelated story* I... at least I'm getting somewhere? Sorta? I go sleep now.

In the interest of actually posting once in a while, lately I've been doing a lot of beading. Or at least it's the one thing I've been doing that comes with actual results. Pretty, shiny, results!

I have a habit of trying to do things with string that would probably be better done with wire (which I should really learn to use), but this time I've hit on a design that actually works!

Pictures behind the cut! )

I really don't think I like the new counter on the Nano site. It's telling me how many unproductive days I've had. And since I tend to be behind, behind, behind and then do a huge rush one day and catch up this is going to be a source of frustration.

You know? My goal was just to make the wordcount this year. Just 50K on ANYTHING. (I want to make at least 1/2 of that on original stuff if I can...) And I felt like I was cheating so bad.

Well today my efforts are as follows:
Fic: 410 words
History Essay: ~700 words
Chem paper: ~2000 words

... Don't feel like such a cheater anymore, I gotta tell you. :P (Yes, I did all 2700 words of homework today. My brain is all spongy and I'm going to sleep now.)
stariceling: (canon)
I mentioned earlier that I'm watching Kuroshitsuji and Miracle Train. The latter is a fun series centered around a supernatural train that only troubled women can board. On it they will find the human incarnations of different stations on the Oedo line, who are dedicated to helping them solve their problems. On the Miracle train there are also the Guide (Akari, who has such a bad sense of direction she manages to get lost on the train) and the Conductor (a nameless(?) masked man), as well as a small dog named Tokugawa, but we haven't learned much about them where I am in the series.

I should admit it's very much bishounen/fanservice, with a lot of trivia about the Oedo line, the areas around the station, and Japanese subways in general (I'm finding that interesting). So far I love it! I love the interactions between the guys, this different stories, the trivia, and especially episode 7, where they start to hint at having a deeper plot.

Info on the six main stations! Cut for pics )

As I said, episode 7... well, it's interesting. I want to see where it goes. On a shallow note, it has made me ship train stations. (I won't ship countries 'cause it's silly. I don't ship anything in Kuroshitsuji even though I'm pretty sure everyone watches that for the yaoi. Yet... I'll ship train stations. Yes.)

I spent literally half the series resisting, but THIS has decided me. YES. (I'm sorry the subtitles got stripped out. I'm not even sure how I did that. Anyway, the two people I specifically want to show it to know that much Japanese anyway.)

Movies

I went to see Despicable Me today. The movie itself was quite good and funnier than I expected. (Dreamworks movies always seem to come out love or hate for me.) I guess I should avoid spoilers here, so I'll just say I really want a squid gun! XD

Here there be spoilers )

Aside from the squee, I don't think I'm going to bother going to see movies in the theater anymore. The commercials they play before films really do piss me off that much. So fuck it. Not wasting money on that anymore.

If I may shift to Pixar, why are Cars and Monsters Inc. both getting sequels? O.o I'm not precisely complaining (I loved both movies), but both of those stories just seemed finished to me. Whereas from the first time I watched The Incredibles I have wanted to see what happened next. I mean, it's a world with superheros/superpowers/etc. where superheroism suddenly becomes illegal for 15 years. What happens to the supervillains? What happens to all the kids with powers growing up during that time period? What about the other moonlighting superheros? THERE IS A WORLD FULL OF POTENTIAL HERE AND I WANNA SEEEEE!

... More than that I'd like someone to share my insane ideas with, but no dice. *sigh*

I should have fic for y'all, but I'm out of editing mode and back in idea-spaz mode, so maybe next time...

The best April Fools joke of all was the one the weather played on us here.

For the last two weeks it has been all warmth and buds and spring breezes. (Spring is our windy season, doncha know.) And it feels of spring and smells of spring and we're all breaking out the shorts and shucking off coats...

And today the weather is all, "AHAHAHA EAT SNOW, BITCHES!"

I should note that this is not unusual. The first dozen or so times you try to declare it spring, our fickle mountain weather just feels obliged to take a day or so and declare, "I will SURE SHOW YOU!"

I just have to admire the timing.

Unrelated: Today I found the notebook I wrote the second bit of my Shadow story in. YAY! Now I can type things!

Also, I got the non-chlorinated waste all over my hand in lab today. (The waste bottle was so full that I started pouring off my solvent and it went "blurp blurp" and vomited a geyser of I-don't-know-what. And no, I am not making this up. I will repeat it tomorrow if you don't believe me.) My hand doesn't hurt. The yellow stain is pretty much faded by now. I really hope this is due to repeated hand-washings and not because the I-don't-know-what has been absorbed through my skin.

That's about it for now. Yes.
stariceling: (lurk)
I am returned from spring break, in far better condition than I left. I think I mostly forgot to tell people I was going to be in Hawaii for a week. Um... oops?

But YES. BEST TRIP EVER.

There was much swimming. I haven't been swimming in years and now I can't remember for the life of me why because going in the ocean was like coming home. And I went snorkeling about as often as I got a chance and absolutely loved it. BECAUSE ALL THE BEAUTIFUL FISH AND CORAL AND FISH AND THINGS AND FIIIIISH! Which leaves me more flail-y with joy than is probably allowed, but FISH.

To be fair, this is kind of how I always am. I go out on a beautiful hike in the desert, surrounded by majestic plateaus and mountains, and I am all, 'LIZARDS! THERE WAS A LIZARD! EEEE!' (Only more quiet-like, so as not to scare them.) Only this time it is fish, which is probably a little more reasonable since they are pretty amazing. Though I did get all excited over lizard sightings too. And chickens. There are chickens EVERYWHERE on Kauai.

Plus I had the chance to eat lots of delicious fresh fish. I probably should refrain from posting about food because I have some unreasonably strong opinions. :P And I enjoy trying new types of icecream/frozen treats more than is probably healthy. Enough to say that there was fish of various styles and sushi and frozen treats and IT WAS GOOD.

Also, there was melon-flavored everything. I had melon icecream (of a brand that I think comes from Korea?), melon ice slush (with little gummy balls in it to represent seeds), melon Hi-chew (I am still wowed they sell multiple flavors of Hi-chew in the normal grocery store), and deeply regret that I did not get the melon mochi when I had the chance. (Also, melon bread, but I couldn't eat that one.)

Then there was hiking and kayaking (kayaking! Kyaaa! I've always wanted to try it). And pretty much nothing in the way of shopping but for the twenty minutes I grabbed in the Japanese import store in Ala Moana. (I have two Kindaichi novels now YAY!) It rained on us a little every day and was just absolutely beautiful in general. And I have pictures to prove it. And I may be subjecting y'all to a photographic tour of Diamond Head if I can get my home internet working.

Lack of internet several places on the trip forbade any ZOMG I'M IN HAWAII posts, and now my internet at home is down. :P I owe people emails. And fic. We'll see if it gets fixed, and if not employ a thumb drive, yes? (Library internet always works. XD)
stariceling: (happy)
So, [livejournal.com profile] rice_kracker has gotten me into Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. *pokes her* As in, making happy squeaks over everything and laughing and crying and plotting epic fic for it. (And developing my own head-canon on certain points and everything. Too much fun!)

In the manga I am over halfway through reading Stardust Crusaders (I did read Jonathan and Josef's stories first. ;_; So very <3). I am a little past the point where they run out of major arcana to describe Stands and start in on the Egyptian gods. Now, my understanding was that the Stands are just defined by the tarot cards for convenience. (We have at least one stand in canon so far that I don't believe is ever assigned a card or a god.) Especially since some of the tarot chosen seem to define the personality of the person more than the abilities of the Stand.

So for my maybe-sorta-epic fic plot I'm going to have some OCs (and, yes, I need some Stand users). So right now my master plan is to use the minor arcana to describe them! Because it's totally open, and those cards are considered to also have meanings in tarot readings. This leaves me doing research on the usual meanings, tweaking around what to assign to which character, all for a detail that I might not even mention in the text! Seriously. With one exception, I might just use these for chapter titles.

I'm going to be sad if I get later in the books and find the minor arcana all used up on canon characters. Anyone care to spoil me on this point? Are they available?

My tarot notes and babbling below the cut )
stariceling: (wip)
I just typed/posted my last two prompts for this entry. Whee! I'm now not accepting any more prompts until December. (Since I know there was at least one person who wanted to make a request and then didn't. ^^;)

I... actually have no idea what my October wordcount is now. DX Because I technically wrote the last two prompts in October, but I only typed them yesterday. Oh, and I just added a two-page scene to chapter 4 of the AU to fix the horrid plot hole that was bothering me. And I edited the hell out of chapter 2 until I'm finally mostly happy with it... *le sigh* It is NaNo month, and my brain is still cleaning up from NaNo practice month. I should have seen this coming...

Current NaNo count: 3081.
I guess I should be upset that I'm 300 words behind right now, but I'm not really. O.o I wrote two scenes in two days, so I feel kinda accomplished. The only problem is them being rather short scenes. I also actually have an idea where I'm going in both the short and the long term, so... yeah. I shall soldier on! At least one scene tomorrow!
stariceling: (clean)
I say once a week and then I'm all "OH HAI YOU CAN HAS SPAM TAIM NAO?" Yeah. Sorry. ^^;

I know I should get around to posting fic. Just one problem with this... I'm still not used to writing on the new computer. So new computer has become my "doing stuff that requires internet and/or actual RAM" computer, and old computer is now my writing computer. Only old computer has no internet now. I suppose I should find my thumb drive if I want to post fic.

Problem: Thumb drive is on keychain. I have no freakin idea where my keys have gotten to. Does anyone know!? They have to be here somewhere or I couldn't have gotten home! *is going a little crazy looking for them*

And since Livejournal knows the location of everything: can ANYONE tell me where this picture is from? Please? cut for random silly Conan pic )
